SAMPLE PROCEDURES

  

Ability Grouping: temporarily group students of like ability together for a group exercise.

 

Blackboard Recitation:  section off blackboard, ask question, and several students called to the board simultaneously write answers.

 

Exhibitions of results from student activities:  take the best student contributions from class activities, remove names, construct displays, and post.

 

Forum:  presentations by several participants in succession, followed by group discussion.

 

Interview students at the beginning of the semester.  Use information gleaned throughout the semester.

 

Mock Court: assign or elect defendants, prosecuting attorneys, defense lawyers, jury, court stenographer, reporters, sketch artists, etc.  Hold mock trial.

 

Parable Construction: present parable (e.g., one of Aesop’s fables), then have students turn class topic into a parable.

 

Student Participation in conduct of course: let students help pick topics, sequence topics, present topics to class, and make out test questions.

 

Establish a new Tradition: present a once-famous tradition,  express interest in reviving it, let students amend and implement it (Bob: a la “The Dead Poet’s Society”).

 

 Video or Audio Tape Interviews: the instructor tapes experts, colleagues, community members, or former students (why should all the videos you show in class be professional ones?).
